• Treatment for stress and anxiety. Studies have shown that VR can ease certain phobias and help people with paranoia and anxiety in public settings, and reduce social anxiety. Considering that mental disorders are among the leading causes of ill-health and disability worldwide, VR is a welcome additional treatment.
• Enhancing surgical procedures. As Dr Philip Pratt, a Research Fellow in the Department of Surgery and Cancer at Imperial College London, stated, HoloLens is allowing surgeons to understand a patient’s unique anatomy very quickly and accurately. “To perform the best operation, you have to plan it meticulously beforehand. This technology allows us to experience the data that we have collected from patients before their operation in the most realistic and natural way. You look at the leg and essentially see inside of it; you see the bones and the course of the blood vessels,” he said.

A recent PWC study says that VR training is four times faster and four times more focused than typical Class-Room Training. It’s also 3.75 times more emotionally connected with a 40% improvement in operator confidence. Immersive technologies enable realistic simulation that matches the real world situation in such a high degree that we speak of experiential learning. Workers trained in VR demonstrate higher confidence in applying what they have learned, have a stronger emotional connection to the content, are more focussed and show higher retention rates.
